So confused

Heya,
Im so confused with cameras!
I'm looking for a travel camera i love taking photos when im sight seeing plus when im going out or with family i want something small.

What does "best" even mean? Which camera is most suitable for you depends a lot on how you use it, your skill level with taking photos, etc, etc.

The site I trust most for camera reviews, dpreview, in the compact "travel zoom" group. There's nothing particularly wrong with them - they're pretty solid performers, but the Casio FH100 and Samsung HZ35W simply offer more compelling features and better photo quality for roughly the same price. Get any of those four, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Your budget seems to be nearly double what most of these cameras cost, btw. For $600, it might be interesting for you to consider taking a small DSLR instead, something like the . It's a completely different type of camera, not as suitable when going out, and if you want a lens which equals the zoom range of these compacts, you'll end up with something quite bulky - but image quality will be immediately and noticeably better, and the long-term versatility of a DSLR is much higher, allowing you to grow with the camera and get much more out of it. Don't know if it'll be suitable for your purposes, but worth considering, maybe.

...Canon all the way!

You could consider a Nikon D3100 or Canon Rebel. The dSLR's are nice, but a little bulky for travel but if you want something smaller and easier to use try an Olympus Pen PL1 or PL2.

I'm shopping for a travel zoom too, and based on this , the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 is #1

You convinced me, now I like the Casio EX-FH100. It is reported to take consistently great pics, and has the features I like (don't really need GPS).

I'm coming from a compact Sony that I lost in Laos - took pretty bad pics, and Sony's manuals are poorly organized.

I agree!

Canon, for the simple reason - it's better than Nikkon :-)

*g* Welcome back. It's been boring recommending Nikon cameras unopposed these last few months. :P

Good to be back, i have noticed that Nikon sales have increased

Got a note for everyone out there about non branded batteries:
Over the last few years i've managed to pick up a few spare batteries, some Canon others non-branded.
I went out in the lovely december weather here in moscow with a fully charged camera, 3 shots later it was dead - yep the -19deg C drained all the life out of it. changed battery to the 'official' one and yep life was reduced but i managed to get about 60 shots out of it.
lesson: always keep a spare handy, and if in cold conditions either put a woolie jumper on your camera to keep it warm or use the branded batteries

And i'm looking for another compact, seems ive mannaged to scratch the lens on my little ixus (thats two ruined in two years), however don't let this put you off Canons as one years use in my hands is the equivelant of 10 years abuse most people would dish out ....
