Transport in Plovdiv

We are spending a few days in Plovdiv, how reliable is the public transport in the city and what is the best way to get from the airport to the city (The Old Town vicinity) we arrive at around 8.15 pm.

Public transport in Plovdiv is very good - and amazingly cheap too.
Don't be frightened of using taxis either. Bulgarian taxis (the genuine ones) are amongst the cheapest in Europe. A cab from the airport to the city centre will set you back about 15Levs, which is around €7:50.
I wouldn't bother too much with hostels in Plovdiv. You can get a very good double room in a 2* or 3* hotel for around 40-50Levs (per room - not per person). That'll include breakfast for both of you too.
The exchange rate is (and has been for years) €1 = 1.95Levs.

Thanks "flying bob", your help is appreciated, we are currently looking at two options for accommodation, guest houses, both close to The Old Town and around the 30 euro mark and with breakfast. We also have the option of a private room with ensuite.

Any great suggestions for a walking tour (1/2 a day) to get to know a bit of the town or even cycle tours.

Certainly not a cycle tour. The traffic/drivers in Plovdiv have little time for pushbikes. The driving is very short fused in the city, as it is in most of Bulgaria.
There are excellent hotels in The Old Town that are such a short walking distance from anywhere. The Main Square in Plovdiv also has some very good and cheap hotels too, plus there are some excellent restaurants everywhere.
Watch out for the 'Friendly' cats and dogs that come and scrounge at your dining table. Oh - they're friendly enough, but covered in fleas. You won't notice them though, until you wake up the next morning covered in red garden peas, that'll have you scratching for days.
There's plenty of street entertainment going on in Plovdiv too. Small 4-5 piece bands regularly set up, as well as excellent solo buskers.
It's difficult to single out an actual place to stay, as I've been there so often and never had a bad thing to say about any of the hotels I've chosen.
