So I know this topic has been well explored in previous posts, but I'd like to get some new input in case things are a bit outdated. I currently live in Japan, but during my spring vacation I was hoping to do some volunteering somewhere in Asia (Cambodia, Bangladesh, Nepal...). I've been contacting the more well-known organizations, but since I'm a little strapped for money, I may have to volunteer through different means. Any advice on where to volunteer for anywhere between a couple days to a week would be greatly appreciated.
What are you offering for a "couple days to a week" ?
I'm an English teacher in Japan, so I'd be more than happy to help at any schools, whether it's helping teach English or anything else. I'm really up for anything; farming, orphanages, construction, etc. Right now I'm planning on being in Thailand and Cambodia during a trip that's about 15 days in late April/early May, so if anyone has any ideas about either of those countries, I'd be eternally grateful!
I was in Battambang in Cambodia in september and saw loads of notices in the hostels looking for people to help out in the local schools. Anything from a few hours to a week.
Seemed to be alot of travellers in that area mainly to volunteer.
I have friends in Phnom Penh that can always use another helper, no fees involved. They help orphans and poor families with: food, shelter, medical, dental, schooling, etc. If this is something you might want to learn more about, send me a PM.
Just curious with so many volunteers in Cambodia, How do some people with NO teaching or communications skill still manage to work as ESL teachers??? Is everyone a volunteer worker in places like Siem Reap?
It is a case of what is available. Volunteers that come to Cambodia are welcomed at orphanages and schools and as long as you can speak english well that is enough qualification. Language schools pay badly if at all so their employed staff are not that great either.
