when i was flying in the US, I also found tickets relatively expensive compared to europe or east asia (although distances are indeed long).
the cheapest i found was with low cost airline called spiritair. however, it is the worst airline i ever flew with. so, don't have high expectation, and do have a some insurance. they regularly cancel and delay flights if they are not full/profitable enough. they also had a pilot strike last year. and it has the worst customer service in the world. we couldn't even buy food on the plane. anyway, it is still the cheapest, and becoming very popular on u.s. domestic routes and on the routes to central and south american destinations.
note: they charge extra for everything (bag, etc), like ryanair and their buddies....
