Plain of Jars

Hi,

Hi there!

it's ok only, not a big deal. unless you have special interest in their history. the town (phonsavan) nearby is an ugly, dusty establishment. it's a bit far from the town, so better to sign up to a group tour, or rent a motorbike/scooter and explore it just yourself.
but all in all, i wouldn't travel there (the landscape is also a bit boring), it's good only if you're on that route already.
if you happen to stay there, there is a nice hostel/hotel run by friendly locals. can't remember the name, but it has a lot of sculptures & stuff made from bombs and bullets. you can sit around the fire and have some drink when the night falls.
i also heard from locals that there was an interesting gold mine nearby, that is not visited by tourists, so if you really want to make your way to this town, you can also inquiry about this mine.

Have a great time in Laos!

I thought it was kinda a cool place to visit.
I took a bus from Vang Vieng to Phonsovan and then onward to Luang Prabang so it really wasn't far out of my way. And I like historical, archaeological things like that...
I am sure you have seen pictures- but it is really cool to see in person in my opinion...

As far as seeiing the jars there are about 3 or 4 different sites with groupings of jars- There are several groups you can join up with fro a day trip to take you out to the sites. It's easy to sign up with a guide on the main street in Phonsovan-
There are about 3 or 4 decent hotels on that strip. And a market down the street.

Not much else in town as far as I could tell- so your stay only needs to be a day or two.
Easy to bus in and bus out.
