I am presently on a round the world trip and plan to be in South America from January & have the intention to move onto New Zealand around April/May time. I'm planning ahead and am looking at the cheapest way to get across the Pacific; I'm considering everything!! I have heard on the grapevine that traveling on freight ships is a cheap/inexpensive alternative to flying; if you show up at port and offer a service on the ship, you in turn get the cheap crossing. I don't know if these still exist but I have heard stories about people traveling on these ships.

As far as I know SA and NZ is not a main route for cargo traffic, however you may find something.
Many cargo companies offer exclusive trips on their ships for adventurous travellers, however these are fairly pricey. Unless you can find a cargo that would take you onto board, flying is still the cheapest option.

If you are in SA, you can also try to go to cargo ports and talk to the port master. But be careful, some of these ports or the area nearby can be a little dangerous.

Cheap freighter travel (compared to flying) is by-and-large an urban myth. In this day and age thinking that you can somehow work on a ship without the proper skills/certificates is a total urban myth.
