Hi there
The regulations are 100 ml or less sealed in a zip lock plastic bag. You are required to remove that plastic bag from your cary-on (hand) luggage and place it in a tray when you go through the security screening.
Checked (holding) luggage can contain any other liquids you will be bringing with you. I have not seen any restrictions in the amounts of liquid that can be placed in your checked luggage. I've brought back 1-2 750 ml bottles of liquor along with the normal things of shampoo, etc. when I've traveled to/from various places. I've not had a problem yet with the amounts I've had in our checked bags.
I recommend placing any liquids you'll have in checked bags to also be placed in plastic bags. It's just a precaution in case something leaks - such as shampoo or cologne. (My husband doesn't really like all of his travel clothes to smell like the perfume section of a department store. It's happened.)
Also keep in mind, if security chooses your holding bag to check by hand - they sometimes randomly pick them or if they see something suspicious when x-rayed - they will not put your things neatly back when done. Anything glass could end up at the top and broken. Plastic bags are a good thing.
If you carry anything, such as a small tool kit, nail kit and/or sewing kit - place those on top so they can easily see what they are before digging to the bottom. I carry all and learned my lesson. I also had a ceramic wind chime all neatly packed in the center of the bag for protection. Forgot to put the kits on top. When I got home - the wind chime was on top and broken.

Thats a lot of help. I'm not to worried as I doubt i'll need any liquids on me. Possily water, but thats it. Saves the hassle of the 100ml rule

An interesting bit of travel trivia: Some countries (to their credit) maintained their common sense and never jumped on Homeland Security's hysterical bandwagon so there are a few cases where you can load up your carry-on with as much liquid as you like with no worries.
For example, bringing all the rum you can carry from Cuba - no problems with it in your carry-on (so long as you have a direct flight to your destination of course...)

They didn't seem worried about liquids when I flew from Cape Town recently - I was about to separate them into a clear plastic bag and they told me not to bother.
In the uk you can have upto 1 litre of liquids but have to be in 100ml bottles so ur aloud 10. Im not sure about international flights
Pudong Airport in Shanghai, and most of the Chinese airports I've flown through are pretty strict... they still make me 'taste' what's in my kids drink bottles too! Even though they are nearly 5 and 3, when we travel we take 'baby' cups so there's no misunderstanding that it is for the children on the flights.
