rows querystring parameter doesn't work anymore in forum?

For the last many years I've had the forum bookmarked with ?rows=50 in the querystring. The difference between frequency with which people post here, and with which I visit here, means that there's almost always ~30-40 threads with new activity for me to look at.
Somewhere in the last few days, things have changed so that loading forum.cfm with ?rows=50 has caused an automatic redirect to forum.cfm without querystring. This is rather annoying, as I now have to load two pages to see all activity. Could we get this option back, or have a preference only for logged in members "show x threads per page"? I'm totally fine with the selectbox which I think used to exist being gone, and I can imagine the querystring diluting google juice and stuff when linked to, but I do sorely miss this option, and think the forum is active to such a degree that 25 threads per page is really too little...

We got rid of this a couple of days ago. For the two reasons you mention - most people don't need the extra option. And Google was having trouble with all the extra URLs (despite all our other best efforts to block them).

Happy to consider making the number of threads showing higher though. 50 seems a good option.

I wonder, would anyone mind making the number of posts per thread higher as well, say 20?

I see that it's currently showing 50 threads per page as suggested, however I would disagree with this and say it's too much. It results in quite a bit of scrolling, which is something I really don't like - and in the case of a forum will make me more likely to quickly scroll through and not notice threads. It's basically information overload for me, if you get what I mean?

Added to that is the current light colour scheme, the alternating white & light blue backgrounds don't contrast with each other - and the combination of the scrolling with more threads per page and the lack of contrast effectively results in me not wanting to look at the page any more.

With posts per thread, I would suggest 15 would be a good number - 10 does seem a little on the low side right now, but I would be concerned 20 could be too much

I'd be happy with the 50 threads and 20 posts option, because I'd rather scroll then have to click next.

Circling back on this

Would it be an idea to have 50 threads on the main forum page (ie. ), but the old default (30?) on each of the topics (General Talk/System Talk etc)?

Alternatively, Rob, would something else help the legibility of those pages for you? One idea I had was to perhaps make the top 5 new threads actually show the first sentence of the entry itself, but that then becomes a bit of a haven for spammers...

That would work from my side. I suspect it's still not good for mojorob, though, and this really should be user-configurable.

Besides the spammer angle, this would also break the flow of scanning over things, so I wouldn't be in favour of that.

Would definitely agree that it should be configurable by the user - most forums tend to have options for amount of threads and posts to show on one page.

Sadly, that was probably before Google started emailing them that this was a problem

It seems the ideal solution would be to make this user-configurable, but only for logged in users. I'll see how feasible that is!
