tips on finding hostel jobs?

Hi all!
Has anyone here ever worked or is currently working in a hostel in South America (or anywhere else, really) ? I'll be travelling around from January on, but my budget is looking like it's going to be tight so I'm going to need to find a hostel job somewhere in Argentina, Chile or Peru.
I was thinking about just showing up and going around all the hostels I can find with a pile of CVs and a big ass smile hoping it'll be enough to get someone to grant me accommodation and food in exchange for work, but if anyone has tips to share than I'd be ever so grateful!
I'm also looking into volunteering positions, but they all seem so expensive and/or ask for qualifications which I don't have... hard hard hard!
Seeking guidance please!
All the best to you!
Maya.

Pay is very low in those countries and they will be looking at employing one of their own kind first before a foreigner.

You would need a good working knowledge of Spanish.

You would also have to check to see if you need a visa to work in those countries.
