Travelling to Oz, March/April 2012

Hi everyone,

hey, im also heading out to oz on my own (very daunting) .. i fly on 16th of may, i too had the same problem, all my friends are at uni or are commited with work so i just thought i may aswel do it alone!

Definately wanting to meet people to travel with, im flying to sydney but plan on heading up to cairns and working my way down the east coast.. im interested in visiting south east asia..thailand, vietnam, indonesia.. but i thoguht it was best to plan that after oz, maybe on my way home, if i come home? haha .. because i just didnt feel like id be safe in those places on my own..

have you booked your flights yet or sorted your visa? Im 20 from birmingham btw x

i know, I'm really freaking out at the thought of going it alone! But i know it'll be a huge regret if I don't! As of yet i have nothing booked, but have most of the money saved!! How did you decide where you wanted to go. i think im struggling at deciding where I want to go exactly within aus, aww it's so frustrating Originally I wanted to fly into Perth, then i decided I wanted to fly to Melbourne, now I don't know! How are you planning you route??

It's great hearing that I'm not alone in feeling anxious about the whole thing !!

Glad to hear from you
Trish (Ireland, 24)

I dont know how i decided, i mean ive been wanting to go since i was 16 and just left college and decided to find a job and save!

So last month i sorted out my visa and this month ive just booked my flights and now im saving to get 3000.. i decided on to fly to Sydney because its a popular city so i thought as im on my own im bound to meet other travellers? Also, internal flights arent too expensive in Australia either, so im planning on heading north of Queensland and then work my way back down the east coast, but obviously it could be very different when im out there and who i meet etc.. but things like Whitsundays islands etc just off Queensland look amazing..

I wasnt that interested in Perth but i do want to visit there at some point, but ive heard its mostly desert like etc.. but i really want to go Ayers Rock!

I have no idea where to stay when i get to Sydney or what im going to do when i actually land (oh my god!! ) so to go with the flow kind of thing , maybe?

You need to get something set in your mind and then see what happens cause obviously if we didnt do it, wed regret it! When i booked my flights i had major butterflys in my belly, and i know when it gets to april and im so close i will be crapping myself.

Your lucky to have most of the money saved, if i did i would be going next week haha! But ive worked out with how much im planning on saving ill have enough by May, so ive had to go then ! Do you think youll be booking soon? if so, that way its set in stone and you have to do it!! haha xx

Omg grace, your so organised well done you!!

so I'm meeting the travel agents on Monday so will at least get my prices sorted!!! am thinking pretty much the same as yourself, arrive into Sydney ( like you said it's probably the biggest haven for travelers so more likely to meet friends) then up to Cairns then work my way down!!

I really want to get my regional work done early also, I think this will be hard work but lots of fun!!

I'm so nervous, was discussing it with my family tonight, and sadly not one of them said "good for you" and i was met with, "are you crazy going alone" etc. AAHHH how annoying is that!! Where are you flying from, and are you going more or less direct to Sydney??
Have you any friends over there already??

Also one last question...are you bringing a backpack instead of a suitcase..i think i will

Trishy x

haha i dont think i am, especially when i dont understand the regional work, ill just go with the flow and find out there ? oops.

I booked with emirates online, i fly from birmingham to dubai, from dubai to sydney (but i have a ten hour wait in dubai :| ) and i paid £870, i think if you book with travel agents/over the phone its a bit more expensive.

My flights are return aswell but ive had to book my return for september, and then when the flights come out for may13 i can change my flight then.

I have two friends over there at the moment, one currently at Airlie Beach and the other in Surfers Paradise, my friend at surfers paradise will be leaving in January though and the other in Airlie Beach is due to come home in April, but i think he may be putting through for his 2nd year!

Yes, im going all out with a backpack, its much easier and suitable when moving around etc..

IM SO EXCITED! xx

haha as far as i know (i may be corrected on this) is that if you work for 3 months, say on a far, fruit picking etc, or in the northern territory, you can then apply for your second visa!! i think

How come you had to book for return in Sept, will it be easy to change it??

I think I may just book a one way ticket, not sure yet!!

I dont know how im ment to feel...scared, excited, nervous, more excited haha sound familiar!!!

Well if I'm out there before you feel free to get in contact! its so great knowing that I'm not the only one going alone

xx I see fun times ahead for us

ohh yeahh i get you !

i had to book it to return for september because the flights for May13 arent out yet, but when they are it will be fine to change, i rang them up to check and then when i book i rang them again to put a note next to my booking that i will be changing my flight..

I think it is easier/works out cheaper to book a return and also, ive heard they may be funny about a one way ticket etc but i dont know how true that is.

Yes definately let me know when your heading out! i have 6 and half months to wait! xx

Hey

Dont worry about being met with the 'you are crazy to do it alone' thing, it is the exact same response I have got from my family!! Im going to to Oz in March and staying for 2 months travelling from Sydney up to Cairns. I cant wait!

Everyone who I have spoken to has told me that going it alone was the best decision they have ever made. Think of the freedom we will have not having to worry about what anyone else wants to do. There will be plenty of people you will meet through your hostels and work - Oz is buzzing with backpackers!

Hope you both have an awesome time!
Alex
