Travelling alone to Sydney/Cairns in August 2012

Hi,

I can't help you with any info as I'm not there myself yet. But I will be in Sydney then! If you're looking for a friendly face or party partner you're more than welcome

20 days isn't a huge amount of time to do from Cairns to Sydney in, you'll be on the move fairly regularly, it's around 2700km. Does OzExperience bundle the activities you want to do in their package? If so it might be worth going with them so you don't have to book when you get here.

If you can, I'd go up into the Daintree for a couple of days from Cairns, I think the diving/snorkelling would be best to do from Cairns as well because the reef was best up there, although I'm not sure what it is like after Cyclone Yasi, you might need to check with the locals.

Skydiving at Mission Beach was awesome, you actually jump over the islands and land on the beach. You'll need a few days in the Whitsundays, a few days on Fraser Island, a couple of days in the Blue Mountains and a couple of days in Sydney which accounts for almost all your time.

Hi there,

I travelled from cairns to Melbourne on the greyhound just a few months back. 20 days isnt alot of time but maybe I could suggest places to skip by. Dont do Townsville/Magnetic Island as you wont be missing much. Travel from cairns to Airlie Beach and do the whitsundays, they have the most beautiful beaches but it will take 10 hrs on the bus. Next stop should be Brisbane which again is 16hrs on a bus, Surfers Paradise is a MUST which is only 2hrs away and finally skip to Sydney.....lots to do there.

Hope this helps

ah thanks Aaron I might take you up on that offer!

Your advice has been really helpful Ozmad and Timtravels. I expected to be on the move alot but its made me wonder whether I should cut down my time in Thailand a little? My main reason for going there was to take a break from the long journey, check out a few temples/palaces, paradise islands and rave on at the full moon party,That would still leave me with 24 days in Oz but would that make much of a difference?

Oz experience does include alot of things I would like to do, as does the greyhound. Which would you recommend? I know I have lots of time to plan but I'm that excited I cant stop researching it all lol! I have seen that some people have recommended flying to save time in places but i'm not sure as I think part of the experience is meeting people on the long journeys from place to place.

What do you think the chances of meeting someone on a similar short itinerary as me would be?

Sorry for all the questions! xxxx

I'm not sure if the extra 4 days will make a big difference, if you're enjoying Thailand you might as well spend time there

From what I've heard OzExperience tends to be a younger crowd and Greyhound has a bigger age range. I've never travelled with either so don't really know what they're about. You'll meet people at the hostels you stay in and the activities you go on, I met some great people snorkelling in the Whitsundays and we ended up travelling together to Darwin!

Oz mad, thats good advice. I am just finalising my route, I think I might break the Airlie Beach to Brisbane bit up a bit.

Kelly I am doing the same route but for 31 days, so should be able to let you know how I found it

Gareth

Hi Kelly,

I'll be travelling the east coast in july/august too..

I'm also going to be a girl alone, but I've been told that it's never an issue - plenty of people to meet!

I was thinking of going north to south too, the opposite to most people, but time is of the essence for me as I want to go across to Perth too.

From people that i've known who have done this trip they say DON'T do Oz experience unless you're 18-20 and on your gap yah as they'll take you on trips you might not want to go on and it's usually full of people who are on their year out before uni.

For this reason, and others, I'm going with Greyhound I think!

What plans have you made?

yes im going with greyhound too as I have heard this before. How long are you planning to do it in? I have 21 days, will land in cairns the 8th august. Haven't really made any particular plans yet I might just go with it when I am there. roughly want to do this though:

Cairns
Airlie beach and whitsundays
Kroombit
Fraser island/rainbow beach
Brisbane
surfers paradise
Noosa
Byron bay
Sydney+blue mountains

Soooo excited! what date are you heading there?

Kelly
