Two mates planning a July - Aug American Road trip.

Hello,

Sam and Rob,

Since you are from the UK and planning to stay a limited time (90 days or less), you can visit the US without a visa as long as you first apply at the ESTA site--info is located here:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html#countries

Make sure you meet all the requirements--including having a passport that doesn't expire until at least six months after you plan to return to the UK--the US passport agency can be real strict about this.

As far as RV/ car rentals, there are quite a few--from the regular sites like Hertz, Alamo, Dollar, National, Enterprise, and Avis--to those that specialize specifically in RVs, like Cruise America, RV Rentals.com, and Autopedia. Traveling at that time won't be cheap, however. Current rates for a small RV that sleeps 3 for 1 month from Cruise America out of Seattle from July 2 to August 2 are running about $5,400 (including the mileage charge);--and this doesn't even include the gas (petrol). Gas here is cheap compared to the UK ($3.50 per gallon--a gallon being equal to about 3.8 liters).

Hopefully, you can find some others who want to travel with you. Then you can get an RV that sleeps 6 for only about $300 more--and thus cut your cost almost in half on a per person basis.

Enjoy your trip

Sam,
Gary gave you excellent advice. Forget the RV rental idea. The costs are just ridiculous. When you add the rental costs, petrol and a drop off fee, it is way out of your budget.

Do some research now on renting a vehicle on the east coast and leaving it out west. There are usually drop off fees. They can be substantial. Once you have a ball park quote, then you will know if buying makes sense for your adventure.

I have helped 12 TP members buy vehicles here in Vegas. It usually makes sense if you are here at least 2 months and sleep in the van part of the time. Motels across the US run at least $50/day average. If you sleep in your van 20 days out of 60, you will save around $1K. The savings will be even greater if you are going to hit many of our National Parks. Rooms in our large NPs like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, will be over $100/nite. Many times way over. Camping is around $20/nite. You choices will be a very expensive room, leave the park for cheaper motels or camp. With a van, you can stay in the park cheaply.

I have photos of some of the members I have helped in my gallery. Page 4 and on. Good luck with your planning.

Hey I'm thinking of a USA road trip in June/July would be interested in teaming up with you two lads to share the costs. Messege me if your interested
