It is definitely possible to get to Costa Rica from Guatemala by road - we did this last month. There are shuttle buses (minivans) from Lake Atitlan to Guatemala City (or Antigua if you fancy a stop in a colonial town). From GC there are coaches every two hours or so across the border into El Salvador with little fuss at the border - immigration officers from both sides walk through the coach checking passports, and that's it. It took us about six hours to reach San Salvador. From there we caught a TICA coach at 5am which crossed into Honduras and then out again and around the lake and into Managua, Nicaragua taking about twelve or thirteen hours. The immigration officers on the Nicaraguan side of the border were a little tardy - I think it might have been lunchtime! And there's a temperature check for health too. From Managua we went on to Granada and then Ometepe. From Rivas it is possible to get a private car, a public bus or a TICA coach to the border. We did it by taxi (cheap) but then had to get through the border without help - there was a six hour queue on the Nicuraguan side. I think if you are on the TICA bus, they process the passengers as a group and it's much quicker. Over the border we got a bus to San Jose and got dropped off at the turn-off to Monteverdi.
We actually found land travel through Central America quite tiring - there seems to be very few night buses (because it's unsafe?) and for long distances the departures are very early morning and arrive at the destination just as it's getting dark again.
Enjoy your trip.
