Croatia - sail or self drive?

Me, my husband and my parents are going to Croatia in August for 5 nights. Could you recommend whether it would be better to do a self drive while we are there or would it be better to do a sailing cruise?

5 days is not a long time to spend Croatia, so I think it really depends on whether you want to explore one ore two Islands or the mainland, say Dubrovnik, Plitvice lakes, etc.? Once you made that decision, it's either self drive or go on a sailing cruise. In any case, I'd book accomodation in advance, because you will be travelling in high season. As for the ferries you can book once you're there, but apparently they also fill up pretty quickly in summer.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Stef for the prompt reply. We could spend more days there how many days do you recommend is a good amount of time? Basically we would like to see the land and also have a bit of a beach holiday. If we could see the waterfalls that would be fantastic as we are photographers. If we stay for longer shold we base ourselves in one spot (Dubruvnik for example) for the whole time? Any suggestions on nice cheap self catering accomodation? Thanks

Get a car if you want to see a lot of places. 5 nights on a cruise will just about get you 120km down the coast as there is so much to see and so many beautiful bays in which to anchor.

Maybe if you hire a car you could base yourself in or around Split. By chosing Split as a base you have the luxury of a 4 hour drive south to Dubrovnik; a 2/3 hour drive north to the waterfalls; a quick ferry trip to Hvar, Brac or Korcula islands; 3 hour drive inland to the mountains and the towns of Knin and Karlovac etc; and a trip to Zagreb is quite feasable from Split also.

That's my best recommendation. A boat is a fantastic way to see the islands and the fantastic coastline, but unless you plan to spend at least 10 days you won't get to see a lot.

Feel free to ask me any specific questions you may have about destinations etc.

I agree with Zaksame that 10 days stay is the minimum if you want to explore the islands and mainland at the same time.
If you don't want to base yourself in one place, you could start your trip in Zadar and travel down the coast from there.
We travelled to three islands in one week (Hvar, Korcula and Mljet) and they were definitely worth it.
I also recommend a day trip to Mostar in Bosnia (from Dubrovnik for example) if that fits in your schedule.
Self catering is easy in Croatia, have a look at TP accomodation for Croatia, we booked almost all our apartments here.

Thanks for replying guys

Thanks to your advice, we've scrapped a week trip to italy and added those days between Croatia and Greece. We'll now have at least 9 days in Croatia.
