Taking out travel insurance with a proper travel insurance company is always adviseable. Not only do the creditcard policies have loopholes like you have found out, but they are not good at all especially when it comes to the medical side of things which is where you could have to sell your house or all your belongings to fund a bill if something bad happened. When you hire a campervan, they often allow you to pay an extra premium daily on top of the regular rental cost to reduce that premium to nil. It can sometimes add a lot to the hire cost though.

Anyone who tells you not to get travel insurance is a total fool and has never had anything bad happen on a trip. I know of some 35 year old who was on a flight from Vancouver to Sydney and had chest pains. His flight had to be diverted to Honolulu and he was rushed to hospital. It turned out that he did not have a heart attack, but he did have a bill of over $100,000USD for a few days in hospital! I have also heard of someone who did have travel insurance who had a major accident in the US and was in hospital for a fair few months and had bills running in to the millions. That $1500 that she spent on travel insurance is the best investment she ever made. Had she used the creditcard insurance she would have had to declare bankruptcy.

Just to clarify, we do have travel insurance through STA travel for medical of travel problems for our 10 month RTW trip. There is no way I would undertake this kind of adventure without it. The $700 is just for the insurance for the camper for the next 3 weeks. I was just wondering if there was any kind of service that does provide camper rental insurance within it's travel insurance umbrella, then I could buy that for only three weeks in case something happens to the camper.
