It depends on what you like, what you want to see and do and how long you have.
Number one for me would be Beijing. Forbidden City, Great Wall at Badaling, Tianamen Square, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Duck restaurant, subway system, Beijing Zoo, museums, art galleries, parks (early and you can see the oldies doing their exercises), markets and shops, rickshaw ride, etc.
Xi'an for the terracotta warriors, There is also a smaller set of terracotta warriors that no one goes to visit. I found out about it in the Lonely Planet guide, and the taxi driver had trouble finding it but got there at last. Bell Tower and city wall. Street market.
Hong Kong. Lots and lots to see and do and you can take a trip out to some islands or inland to the New Territories.
Yellow River cruise.
There are various towns you could visit but it would depend on who you asked if they considered it worth visiting. Shanghai does not have that much to offer it in my opinion but the World's Fair (Expo 2010) is on till October 31st so may be worth a visit. You'd have to ask someone who had visited it.
Distances in China are great and I found the easiest way to get around was by plane as trains and buses can take forever. Keep your eye out for China Travel Service bureaus. They are tourist offices and are very helpful. A Lonely Planet guide to China is a good investment. I took a map of Beijing with me which was a great help for finding my way around there.
which water town to visit in SHA ?
There are so many but i gotta pick one due to time constraints - any idea ?
and how to go to the water town from Shanghai city ?

jamiep_21: We have been backpacking in China last June/July for 3 weeks. I would agree with Cyberia on most of what she said. However, Shanghai is worth a visit except if you hate big cities. The two sites I liked the most were the Bund and Shanghai World Financial Center - 3rd highest structure in the world and the highest observation deck (on the 100th floor!). We didn't visit Expo 2010, because we were told it was very crowded and we didn't want to queue for hours on the heat. If you like nature I would suggest you to visit Guilin - Li River cruise and rice terraces. Guilin has beautiful landscape. Try to check out some pictures on the internet.
