The problem is you've never been to the US, and you're starting out in LA!
PLEASE START ANYWHERE BUT LA!!!
Seriously, the freeway system in that area is so complex and the highway speed in that area is so high that I feel I need to warn all foreign tourists. Fly up to Sacramento and rent from there - they drive a whole hell of a lot slower in that area and the traffic will be considerably less - giving you the chance to get used to American highways. Currently regular gas is about $3. a gallon here in Oregon/about average for the USA. You can get RV pricing details at this site.

Budget a month and about $8000 for the first leg of your trip, be a lot cheaper with a rent a car and a tent.Expect many of the northern tourist areas to be closed for the winter at that time of year, might want to call ahead if you are thinking of some place specific.
Over to the east coast.
Whats happening in Orlando? friends? Family? not much else there besides Disney.Miami Beach and a trip to Key West would be more memorable,
budget around $150-$200 per day including rent a car,while you are in Florida
Bus it up to NYC plan on a week or more in NYC and if you stay in hostels and use public transit budget $100 per day., may as well do Boston while you are in the Vicinity.
Niagara Falls would be a 7 hour bus ride from NYC,Chicago would be a 13 hour bus ride from NYC, i'd also budget $100 per day for hostel,food,souvenirs , attractions and bus fare.
So we are up to 2 months and probably approaching $15000.Still in the game?
Points of interest at each destination can be had by exploring past posts, or Googling each state and asking them to send you a travel guide.
I agree with Daawgon on LA just one huge suburban megalopolis, to be avoided if possible.

You missed San Diego ff your list - it was one of the coolest places I went in the US. Best zoo I've ever been to.
If you must go to LA try to get to Magic Mountain. It's a themepark with nothing but rollercoasters.
And I used Flagstaff as a base for the Grand Canyon. I adored Flagstaff. I was there for a week and I have no idea how I spent my time but the hostel was great and I had endless fun. Good times.
LA is a crazy place... Very fun and excited. My sister wants to go live there. It is huge. I am living in Qingdao China currently and it is spectacular. If you want to know more about it please contact me
