Daytrip to Naples/Pompeii from Rome

We (A family of 6 adults and an infant!) will be travelling to Italy in February and planning a daytrip to Naples/Pompeii from Rome.
Main objective is to visit Pompeii site but since most of the artifacts are in a museum in Naples, we would like to visit there too but we only have a day?
a)Would it be possible to do Pompeii and JUST Naples museum in a day? Any tips to accomplish this?
b)Dont want to put Naples in a stereotype but is it safe especially with a baby?

I found Naples very safe. I spent a week there, and wandered round constantly on my own (was 18 years old at the time, and I'm female.) Certain areas i was told to avoid, and I did, but I found everyone super friendly and helpful. Having said that, keep your things secure, and don't flaunt money, flash cameras or anything like that.

In my opinion, it's probably a little hard to do both of those in a day. The day I went to Pompeii I wandered around all day just in the ruins. It's a lot bigger than I imagined. Yes, most of the artefects are in the museum.. but if you had to pick one or the other, I think, go to Pompeii itself. The scale of it is amazing, and though a lot of the small things have been taken to the museum, there are various things on show, and it leaves something to the imagination, which is always nice.

You can also take a nice train most of the way up Mount Vesuvius, or hike some/all of the way, which I LOVED. And the name has slipped my mind, but I think there are more Pompeii-like ruins somewhere near by too? Not sure, didn't go there myself.

Just a little something to think about too. Not sure of the age of your baby - but if you can possibly do without a pushchair, I would recommend it. The roads in Pompeii are original. Stones with huge gaps between, cart tracks down the middle, and no footpaths. I would say if you can take the little one in a backpack or a sling - go for it. I think you would have major issues trying to push a pram around there, and it would be a shame to miss out on seeing things for that reason. (Wear really good shoes for the same reason - saw people struggling in flip flops!)

This is all, of course, just my opinion, but I hope some of it helps, or at least gives you a few things to think about!

Have been to just Pompeii in a day from Rome, but that was pushing it a bit. I would strongly suggest overnighting it in Naples.

Stay an extra day!!
Or Two.
You could spend a full day just wandering around Pompeii.
And while you are down that way, visit Sorrento and Capri!
Dave

the name of the other excavation is herculaneum. i haven't been to pompeii, i only made it to naples and i felt it was a bit dodgy...but pizza napoletana was delicious
