Mexico

So I am looking into going to Mexico from the end of December to mid Jan 2011. I just wanted to know how safe it was in term of the drug war that the news has been showing...
I am assuming that most is in the northern parts closer to the US border. I am probably wanted to be closer to the Guatemala border as I will be coming up from Costa Rica. Probably looking at going south of Cancun along the coast, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Acapulco.

Im sure it really will be fine. Mexico can be politically dangerous but as long as youre not planning on being a lout or getting involved in gangs, you should be fine.
I would recommend Playa Del Carmen for chilling out, Merida for quiet town, Tulum, San Cristobal for night life, history and people...
Campeche is incredible but very small and quiet so you have to make your own fun.
I would definitely avoid Cancun - its horrible. But can be easiest place to start.
I absolutely loved Mexico - want to move there !

Thanks you!!

Yes I have no plans to stay in Cancun! Not my scence! But I think it may be the easier way to get to Playa del Carmen!

I agree. The violence issues are mainly located along the border, for example in Cd. Juarez and the other towns South of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Even there, you will likely not be affected by any of it, since it is pretty exclusively related to drug trafficking. Just stay clear of drugs and you won't be involved! The media reports largely over-exaggerate the danger of traveling in Mexico.

I would definitely recommend leaving the Yucatan and experiencing some of the rest of Mexico, if you have the time! I love the Isthmus area (the thinnest part of the country) for its unique customs and colorful lifestyle. Chiapas is also wonderful and fun to explore. I would skip Playa del Carmen, even, if I were you, in favor of some less touristy spots. If you need a place to stay near Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a bit out of the way, but a bit cheaper and less crazy than Cancun. Tulum is definitely worth a visit.

Have a great time!

Merida makes a great base for ruins trips to Chichen itza, Uxmal and Tulum. Great weekend nightlife and museums too. Play el Carmen is handy to nightlife and ruins trips Go northwest to Palenque, Bonampak. Go over the mountains to san Cristobal de las Casis, then nortwest to Oaxaca.
Oaxaca beaches are great in December January. Zipolite, Mazunte and Puerto Escondido for quiet beaches and eco tours, surfing, rustic accomodations. (except during Christmas)
Skip Acapulco unsless you want the party scene. The danger begins in Acapulco and along the coast north to the border although we made that trip by car twice in the last two years and had no trouble.
The violence is drug related and not aimed at tourists.

such a shame that there's all this threatening advert about mexico! The most problematic is in northern part of the country, but Mexico is huge. All recommendations above are great. personally I also recommend the state of Chiapas. if you're crossing through Gutemala don't miss San Cristobal de las Casas! It's a magic place.
