Mosquito Nets and Malaria Prevention

Hi, planning on travelling through Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia next summer over the course of 6/7 weeks. Planning on staying in the Andean areas and so far no plans to travel to the Amazonian areas of the countries. Was just wondering if someone could help me with regards to whether I'll need to take malarial precautions and whether I should be taking a mosquito net to put up over my bed in hostels etc.

Hi,

If your sure your staying in the Andies and won't be going to the Amazon then you don't need to take malaria pills or a mosquito net. Theres no mosquitoes in the Andies, at least in the high parts, due to the altitude.

I didn't go into the amazon and was advised not to take any pills if it wasn't necessary, but then again it tempting when you are over there to take an excursion so you never know.

Thankyou very much for the reply.

That's what I thought but like you said I may well be tempted to go on a couple of days of trips while I'm there. So do you think it'd be better to jsut take them just incase?
