My first trip

Hi im totaly new to traveling and just need some genral advice. Next year i will have 10 weeks off work with a good wad of money in my bank and i intend to go and see some of the world. Hopefully Vietnam for a week, then Australia for 2-3 weeks and Hong Kong for a few days on the way back.
Firstly it is very likely i will be going on my own, is it really that easy to meet people when you are away? Also how much stuff can you take with you? I mean if you are stayin in hostels i have this image that you cant leave your stuff there during the day and if you did it probably woudnt be there when you get back. Like i say i have no idea what i am getting myself in to and would just like some advice from experienced travellers.

You can just leave your big backpack in the dorm room where you're staying (sometimes lockers are large enough for big backpacks, but most of the time you'd just place it out of the way next to your bed or something, trusting that no one is interested in stealing your dirty clothes), while you take a smaller "daypack" containing your camera / guidebook / bottle of water (+ other valuables) out with you for the day.
Generally people take big backpacks with a size from 35 to 70 liter (8-16kg or so) with them, depending on how experienced they are with packing lightly and only what they need.

And yes, you'll meet dozens of other travellers at the hostels you'll stay at, and most of them will be just as much looking forward to having someone to talk to in the evenings as you are.

Cool im quite used to packing lightly im in the millitary and will be doing a very differnt type of traveling for the 7 months prior to me going away lol.
Just how many sets of clothes do you take with you? Are there anythings you would reccomend taking. The next year is going to drag so much im already far to excitied about it lol.
