It is the voltage that would fry your stuff if you have items with lower voltage requirements. Some countries may have 50 or 60 cycles. Most chargers for cell phones and computers can take a wide range of voltage. Check your chargers and see if the top range is okay for the countries you visit. Often you only need a cheap adapter to make your plug fit the available outlets. You can pick these adapters up in hardware stores in the countries you visit. In Thailand you can even get some adapters from one of the big supermarkets. You shouldn't have to purchase any expensive voltage converters.
There are smaller travel kits you can buy if you want but make sure they are specific to the countries you will visit. Sometimes in a pinch you can just cut the plug off and add on a cheap plug you buy in a local hardware store that fits the outlets in the country you are in. Before you leave home stop in a hardware/electrical supply store and look at replacement plugs and see how easy it is to change a plug if you have to. Have a small screwdriver with you when you travel or even a Swiss Army knife but don't take it on the plane in your carry on! Once in Malaysia I connected my US style plug to their outlet using a couple nails. But I am handy fixing and repairing stuff.

Chances are excellent that any place you stay will have adapters to loan you. Also, if you do buy one, they will be much cheaper in Asia than at home.

You need a UK-worldwide travel adaptor for places like Thailand! I recently went to Thailand and I bought my travel adaptor from Millets before I went.

Just looking for the same thing! I am away to south east asia in January 2011 aswell, I am only goig for 3 months as I am going to USA and Australia. Where are you planning on heading?
