Travelling Aus on my own starting in Sydney for NY

amelia88 has indicated that this thread is about Sydney

Hi Amelia,

I will be in Sydney at New Years and like you, am a bit unsure of what to do/see but I think that the fireworks are a must and a good starting point!!

I fly to Brisbane on 25th October and am heading to Sydney on 29th January. I managed to get a booking at Noah's Hostel, Bondi Beach for 4 nights for $160 dollars (about 100 quid) but they are now fully booked (just like everywhere else!!).

I struggled finding anywhere with less than a 10 night reservations but a friend of mine recommended the Formule' 1 hotel in Kings Cross as she stayed there last New Years. Might be worth a look?

A friend of mine is flying out to join me for xmas now and he can't find any accomodation. I will pester Noah's once I'm in Brisbane in the hopes of a cancellation for him. If I can't get one, I will have to give up my reservation and try to sell it to somebody because the full amount is non-refundable!!!

My sister stayed in Sydney for 4 nights and felt that was long enough to spend there so I've gone on her advice. Try to find somewhere outisde of Sydney and travel in or pester for a cancellation.

I havent travelled before and don't know what to expect but I can't wait to go!!

Speak to you soon.

Fraser

Hi Fraser,

Thanks for your post, good to hear from people in the same position!

Not long now then till you go, bet you can't wait! Yeah, deciding to go so near to the date isn't great, hope can find somewhere. The best place I have found so far that doesn't require nearly 2 weeks booking is the original backpackers hostel, not sure what it's like though? Will deff have a look at the Formule 1 place though too, thanks.

That's rubbish then, but you might easily be able to sell your reservation, as there's probably a lot of people still looking for somewhere to stay, maybe?!

Have you got anything planned for while you're in Sydney yet?

Yeah, it's my first time travelling too, so it's good to speak to others who might be going to the same places too. My tickets came yesterday so getting so excited now!

Hope to speak soon.

Amelia

Yeh not long to go at all.2 more weeks of work and then a week off before I leave to get stuff sorted etc. Plans for Sydney...I really want to do the walk over the harbour bridge, looks great. See the opera house and fireworks and was hoping to do a 2 night surf camp on one of the beaches north of the city. I don't know much about the place but will just see what there is to do when I get there! I've been told by people already that bondi beach us a bit of a let down (but I'll make my own mind up on that one).hopefully I'll be able to surf properly then too!!.where about are you from/flying. Have you arranged any stop overs on the way to oz?

Fraser

Apologies for any poor typing but I'm using my phone as my Internet won't work on the pc!

Oh and the blue mountains is a definately must!!!

I can't wait until I get to counting down the weeks! It's good to hear from people in the same position that may be going to the same places too. Be nice to get to chat to people if they are on fb maybe too before go?

That sounds good, same sort of idea that I want to do really. I've booked on the Oz Experience to travel up the East Coast after NY and that includes a days surf camp which should be cool. Never surfed before (which is a shock having lived in Devon all my life ) so could be a laugh. Yeah I'm hoping will just easily meet people when I'm out there and can see what people are up to, well that's how easy people say it is?

I'm still looking at hostels and thee's 1 on bondi beach and 1 on coogee beach that look good, just checking what dates can stay. The reviews all say how good the beaches are though, so hoping they live up to it, but by whaat you've heard may not be right?!

I live near Exeter in Devon, and flying from Heathrow, nearest can get to really! How about you? I stop off at Shanghai for 11 hours so not really long enough to do anything. Did want to go via Thailand but as I only have a month, there's only so much I can try and do! Have you got any stop overs?

Amelia

Hi amelia!

IT seems im in exactly the same boat as you! wanted to go travelling but couldn't due to work but Ive been given 4 weeks off.

I land in Sydney on Chritmas day, and now all the hostels are saying 10 / 11 day minimum stay so im staying at the Blue parrot. In the Kings cross area, pretty central and near all the night life (as i have been told)!

I have friends and family that have been and they say do, the obvious Sydney bridge, harbour, manly beaches, im planning to go up the coast to Byron bay for a few days aswell. And a good friend of mine was in Sydney for new year last year and said it was amazing!

Kris

Hi Kris,

It seems like there are so many people travelling on their own, so I'm really hoping it will be easy to meet people when I get there! That sounds like what i plan to do, have booked the oz experience to travel the east coast up to cairns though, which should be good. Have u any plans on where else u want to go or just seeing what happens when ur there and travelling to Byron bay?

Still trying to sort a hostel. I've seen surfside backpackers on bondi beach which looks good, but don't know if would prefer to stay more central. The globe and blue parrot were also options. Did u book ur's direct with the hostel?

That sounds like a good plan for NYE, I just hope will meet people and also I don't really know the best places to go!

If u fancy chatting you can add me to fb, Amelia hurtley, don't think there's many .
