9 days on the west coast.

I am trying to plan a short but full trip to the west coast in last week of december into first week of jan.
does it seem completely mad to fly into San francisco where we have friends to stay with for 2 nights, then to drive to LA via Big Sur (having a 2 night stop at post ranch inn then onto LA for one day and night before then driving to the grand canyon??? Would we be better off then driving back to LA to fly ou??t or San Fran? or Vegas?? I know its a whirlwind, but hey, life is short!!

Not the best time of year for this area - usually pretty rainy at this time. I would skip the Grand Canyon in favor of just staying in N. California - the best part of CA. Lake Tahoe, Monterey Peninsula, Big Sur, Napa-Sonoma Wine Country. The worst of the state is LA! If you have extra time I would fly to Vegas.

Is Yosemite open that time of year?

In answer to jambo101, Yosemite is open year-round. That time of year carrying snow chains is a must. Call ahead for road conditions and access points.

Given the tight schedule outlined, I would not drive to LA because you have another full day's drive to Arizona. Instead of burning your time on the highways, fly to Vegas and take an excursion from there to the Grand Canyon. Note, winter can be a difficult time to visit Grand Canyon if the weather turns snowy.

Have fun.

If you make it up to Northern California, you must do a quick tour (could be a day trip) to Napa Valley, even in the winter it's worthwhile. Here's a list of the -snip- I usually recommend to friends. If you don't make it to Napa but want some ideas for the San Francisco area, I have some suggestions on -snip-.

Have a great trip!
