I am planning to go to the Galapagos Islands next may and dont know whether to risk it and wait till I get there to get a cheap price or book in advance. I want to do 8days on a boat. I would like to get as cheap as possible as I know it is extremely expensive!
why not go for tours instead of an 8-day cruise. The boat (budget and even not so budget) are pretty cramped. The staff are great though, and the food good.
To fly to the Galapagos will be around $400 min from Ecuador.
You'll have to pay tourist tax to enter the islands of $100, my guide said on my trip a few days ago that the tax will rise to $200 from 2011.
An 8-day cruise (budget level) will cost you $1,000 or so.
My advice is, if you really really want to come to The Galapagos then do some tours wen you get there.
You can island hop on ferries for $25 or so, you can do day tours for $35 or so, including snorkelling opportunities.
Really Ive just heard that the boats are better!! You see more?? Plus how much is accommodation on the islands?? Can you give me anymore info?? When did you go. Was it amazing??
Oh and I would like to do a couple of dives when I get there?? Any suggestions??
Thanks for all your help!

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. :-)
You can get decent accomm for $10 a night.
Food and other stuff is more expensive than other parts of Ecuador.
But you can still get a set lunch for $2.50 or so.
There are also many rip off restaurants, hotels, gift shops etc.
I believe you should book in advance through the net so as to avoid hassles when arriving to the place. Its better to have be able to rest easy when you arrive and this would have to maximize your time with the place instead of spending your time looking for the best and budget wise place. Enjoy your vacation.
Cheers
For diving on Santa Cruz I can highly recommend Scuba Iguana & Maccarons, both were really excellent & did all the proper checks, good quality equipment etc. You can go diving from Isabella but only if you've got your Open Water. I stayed on Santa Cruz and Isabella, didn't do a boat trip and I don't think I missed out at all, I went on lots of snorkeling & dive trips, inland tour to Sierra Negra and a day trip to Floreana, it's a personal thing but it worked for me and I'd do the same again, much cheaper and you get to enjoy the islands more. Met lots of people who did the boat trips and you do get what you pay for, beware the 'bargain' boat trips I heard some real horror stories! enjoy
