Hiya, i am looking at heading to Melbourne end of Feb too, working for a few months and then to travel the coast! I dont have a clue what i am doing and am hitting it alone! Well im from melbourne oringinally and i have been through majority of hostels in my time. While in school i stayed at Melbourne discovery, it wasn great, really safe and really central!
Stay in central melbourne cause you will pay more the further out of the city you go, and its easy with trams and trains to stay central.

Hey! I'm travelling to Melburne for my own in July (want to work and study english there for 2 months and then travel the 3th month over Australia). As you are originally from there, could you help me with some tips, information or wherever you think is important for me to know before going there ?

I stayed in Melbourne for 2 months and love Melbourne, really nice feel in melb. lots to do etc.
I stayed in Kingstreet Backpackers, was formerly Friendly Backpackers. it changed hands just as i left but if it is anything like it was then will be a great hostel.
I usually hate the city hostels, but i loved this one and will definately be going back.
I found it easy to get around in Melbourne, met some great people and found lots of bars, clubs etc to go to. Melbourne's not to big and not too small, i would recommend melb. over sydney for a first stop as i found it more relaxed and not as daunting.

Im 22 and gonna b in oz from the 25 jan il b headin for melbourne around the 20th feb as i hav distant relatives who live there but wana experience the city on my own first, have no idea where im gonna stay, hav u made plans yet?x
