Do I need a visa?

I am planning on travelling through Vietnam but want to fly to Bangkok and then get a flight to Saigon or Hanoi. I don't plan on leaving Bangkok airport so I presume I won't need a Thai visa? Is this right? Thanks

ok you can apply on line for an visa on arrival in to Vietnam i have loads of info for that place if you need help just let me know

If you already have your tickets out of BKK to Hanoi or Saigon AND your luggage is checked through to your final stop in Vietnam you won't need a visa for Thailand. I have passed through many airports overseas in transit and never had to get a visa.

Usually if you remain in transit and never leave the airport while waiting for your flight you don't need a visa. But if you have to retrieve luggage you usually have to pass through immigration!

For Thailand the passport you travel with determines if you need a visa or you can enter with out a visa and get by with a free Visa Exempt stamp in your passport good for 30 days.

What country passport are you traveling with? Right now tourist visas are free until March.

Years ago, I flew into BKK at midnight and out to HAN in the early am. I thought I would just go to the transit lounge and wait for my flight. BUT, I was flying : BKK-HAN and they did not have a ticket counter in the transit lounge. I had to enter Thailand via the visa waiver. Came back into the airport to kill 7 hours before my flight to HAN. Not a big deal, but one of the problems using discount airlines. Many of them do not have counters in the transit lounges. This was before Suvarnabhumi was built. Might be better now.

I suggest you use the 'visa on arrival system' when flying into VN. I wrote about my experience .

Thanks for the replies. I have a British passport so hope that helps? Basically I can get a return flight to Bangkok for £400 then cheap flights to Vietnam and back...or pay £700 for return flights to Hanoi which is not ideal because its kinda hard to do a circle in Vietnam!

"Thanks for the replies. I have a British passport......"

With a UK passport you get 30 days free entry! So, if you have to go through immigration to get your bags or to change airports or leave the transit area you pay nothing! You get a free 30 day "Visa Exemption" stamp in your passport. Knowing the passport you travel under is the important thing you left out of your first post.

You could even schedule a stay in Thailand for a few days and at your leisure return to the airport and fly on to VN. You could even purchase your flights in Bangkok for VN from one of the many travel agencies in the city.

You have schedule enough time between connecting flights if you have to pick up luggage or change locations.
