30 days are not much for 3 countries, but possible. Figure 7-8 days in Cambodia, 7-10 days in Laos, then your last 12-14 days on the islands in southern Thailand .
covers my trip from Sihanoukville to Pattaya in one day. Pretty easy to do now that the roads and bridges in Cambodia are in good shape. You could be in Trat early afternoon or Pattaya that night. You might want to visit while in Trat. Then over to Samui, Phangan. Good luck with your planning.
You are squeezing yourself in a month. I would keep the Laos to a minimum or next time. tubing is well...tubing. But if you really wanna then 5-6 days then off to Siem Reap. The Angkor Wat area will be at least 3-4 days. You have to factor in travel and being knackered from it. A 5 hour trip to PP and 3-4 days there or just 2-3 if you are not keen on it. Snookyville is so laid back compared to Thailand that some get bored whilst some love it. Another 3-4 days. Your problem now is getting to south Thailand. there are no regular easy ways to do it from there. Once you get to Trat you can elect to fly from Pattaya or Bangkok and plan your travel to whichever destination. But do factor in your travel days and times as to plan your time on the island and getting a flight out for home. add a week and it all gets easier.
I think it is certainly possible to do but the problem is you will always be rushing and wont get to enjoy anywhere properly. In Laos transport is slow as and there is a lot of waiting around. The only way to do this would be to
a) limit the amount of islands (possibly also missing sihanoukville)
and
b) perhaps taking some flights, but i dont know your budget.
from our experience the best part is finding the places and areas you hve not read about online and in lonely planet but which you stumble upon or hear about through people you meet or even that you imagine not to be fantastic but turn out to be alot nicer. Factoring in some of these and the fact that when your in a area you like you may want an extra few days it is certainly better to do a few less places but to actually explore those places than to reach everywhere without actually seeing them.
tubing in laos (vang vieng) is a waste of time unless you want to hang out with drunk foreigners smoking weed idoing dangerous jumps into a river covered with rocks....if that's ur idea of fun then thats fine. If you're trying to enjoy Southeast Asian culture, skip Vang Vieng as its pretty much tourist dominated. If you're just trying to party...why are you even going there? Bangkok is the only place u need to be at.
Many travelers to that part of the world often fly to Bangkok first and stay a few days. During that time they can make arrangements for transportation to Cambodia or Laos or anywhere. When they finish in Laos or Cambodia they return to Thailand again.
Do the math on this. If you are purchasing one-way flights from your country to Cambodia or Laos and then one-way flights home from Thailand you might be be paying more than a round trip flight to Bangkok and just returning to that city.
Some one-way flights are almost the same price as round trip flights. If it makes no difference in cost then do what you want.
Any ideas on how we would travel from Cambodia to south thailand?
Flights between Phnom Penh and Bangkok may be cheaper than flights between Siem Reap and Thailand. Phnom Penh is connected to Siem Reap by ferry and by bus travel.
Thailand has excellent roads and train service. Buses are cheap in Thailand. There is some discount airlines that fly in Thailand, check the weight allowances, if you are overweight you pay a surcharge.
By the way, you do not have to be at a beach to get a tan! Even in Chiang Mai or Bangkok or Phnom Penh you can get a tan just walking around!
