You are now an illegal alien in Spain! As a US citizen you have the right to stay in Spain for 90 days out of every 180 days, so you have well and truly overstayed. The chances are that when you leave the country you'll get nothing more than a slap on the wrist by Immigration authorities. But you could be unlucky enough to get a stamp in your passport banning you from entering the Schengen Zone for a number of years.

The biggest problem could be if you come to the attention of the authorities eg traffic accident, reporting a theft, needing medical or hospital treatment. In each situation you will be required to show your passport and explain why you're still in Spain. This could result in you being deported immediately, and at your own expense.

The sensible thing would be to return home as soon as possible. Don't go to another European country within the Schegen Zone as you will face the same problems. If you don't want to return home, try going to a non-Schengen country for 3 months, then return to Spain.

It's really impossible for anyone to predict what the outcome will be when you try to leave the country. But you can't stay there. What are you living on anyway?
