hi, I hadn't planned to go here but turns out that an Indian friend of mine is going to be home for Xmas and I'm thinking of fitting into my schedule if possible. I HAD planned to fly from Delhi to trivandrum and then tour around Kerala so this is a bit of a diversion. If I do go there, can anyone recommend things worth doing?
Do not substitute Chennai for Kerala. You'll be sorely disappointed you missed that beautiful state. Your friend will understand and probably tell you the same thing.

Ah ok good! I only flew into Chennai with a short layover. Took a tuk tuk to St Thomas Mount. It has interesting history about St Thomas's visit and unfortunately where they killed him, whoops. Its a nice walk up the mount and a great view from the top. The little village at the bottom of the mount is nice too, but there are places all over India like that. Sorry thats all I know.
