I am so curious to learn more about the Asian cultures, but unfortunately, am having much trouble picking a place to go.
I wanted to be in a big city, but not too far from little villages so I can do physical labor there for a few weeks and work in a hospital/ teach English in the city.
I'd recommend Hanoi - it's a great city and there is plenty to see in surrounding areas. Chiang Mai and Bangkok would be good choices too; not so sure I would recommend Phuket and it's not really a big city anyway. I liked Phnom Penh but when I was there in 2006 there were still armed guards outside a lot of the hostels; I'm not sure what the security situation is like today.
