Get an aussie bank account.
ATM withdrawals/statements are not free like in the UK.
You could be charged upwards of $5 (£3.25) everytime you withdraw money or check your balance from an ATM in Australia.
Trust me I learned the hard way and only realised after I had incurred a $70 charge.
Aussie banks will give you a unlimited or limited number of withdrawals/balance checks in exchange for a monthly fee (usually about $4-5).

Hey guys, on a related note....
Is it best to take enough Aussie $'s in cash/travellers chqs/travelcard to last a couple of weeks, and then transfer the bulk of your money from your UK bank account to Oz account when you get there? Anyone know how easy transfers are? Assume they can be done by internet banking as normal?
