Also could anyone shed some light on russian visas?
For general information on possible train journeys, take a look a - has quite a lot of useful stuff on it. It also has some info on Russian visas on the Russian page, and refers to which is a really useful website when it comes to Russian (and a few other) visa information.
Hey kieran, welcome to the site! The trickiest part about getting a Russian visa is getting an invitation letter. You can just buy these online though. I think the site I used is called waytorussia . Totally legit and works a charm.
The other think peculiar about russia is that they like you to register in each city you visit for at least a few days (at least that was how it was a few years back). Your hotel organizes this for you generally, but it means handing over your passport, which is totally unnerving. All I can suggest is take photocopies along! This is also advised if a police pulls you over. Show them a photocopy of your passport, not the real thing. They apparently like to try extort money out of people like this. Keep the phone numbers of your embassy on your phone, so if police start acting up like this, you ring your embassy. Haven't had any problems myself I must add, but better safe than sorry I say

Thought i'd lost my job so was going to cancel the trip. But i havent, so im going to continue with the plan.
I've been thinking of skipping russia out and maybe get to ukraine via poland. Theres a daily train from Kaunas to Warsaw.
Still having trouble deciding where i want to be and what i want to see. I'm going to browse through the site today and look at peoples blogs and routes.
