Going solo

Hi everyone

Australia is fairly expensive. How much you spend will depend on how much travelling you do, what kind of places you stay in, and what kind of lifestyle you want. Also how new you want your car.

I quite liked the Gold Coast area, so you may want to stay there for some time with your family between trips elsewhere, so save some money.

Best time to go I would think would be mid October with the weather getting worse in the UK and getting better there.

When you get a visa, you might consider a work visa in case you want to earn a bit of money from a temporary job.

In your place I would buy a Lonely Planet guide to Australia (available in W H Smiths and the like). It's packed full of useful information.

Thank you for the advice I eill buy a copy of lonely planet guide to Australia this weekend.. Im not looking at buying an expensive car. Just ones thats reliable and has a gd amount of REGO on it.. Iv heard around 5000 AUD is about right plus I know fuel costs will be quite high.. I plan on staying in hostels n maybe a few hotels along the way. But also want to go on WHV " works holiday visa " to ensure I have enough funds. All in all I want to make sure I have enough to go on as many trips as possible n see the entire country.. Hopefully seeing every state.

Do you think with £10000 that will all be possible if I plan it right and live on a budget?

I would budget at least £1000 a month, but if you are doing more, ie going on excursions etc, you might want to increase that.

When I travelled around Oz last year I was spending around £250 a week and that was being as frugal as possible - ie always in hostels, always cooking for myself, rarely going out to pubs.

Then of course you will need to factor in the cost of buying a car.

I agree with Cyberia, except I would probably say Australia is VERY expensive!

Steve how much do u think a car would cost?? I will be going on work holiday visa so the 10k is for the 6months or so... More then likely I will have small jobs in-between.. Do u think what I'm planning on saving will be about right or will I definitely need more?

Thanks for the help guys

I think I paid about $4k for a car, and that was with two other people, so about £2,500. That was enough to get a good reliable car to get us from Adelaide all the way to Cairns eventually without any problems.

I would think 10k for 6 months would be fine then

About 11,250AUD for 6 months should be about right with petrol n other car costs aswell as hostel costs n food etc I just want to see as much as possible.. I can't wait!!
