Ive heard that for the popular trains tickets are sometimes sold out over 2 months before.I was curious to know if it would be easy for me to get a ticket from Delhi - Agra on the day ?.
I've spent more time on Indian trains than I care to remember and the only time I've ever had an issue getting a ticket was during a big holiday/celebration on a very popular route, but even then I just jumped to another not-sold-out class and was on my way with no hassle. Maybe a couple of times I had to wait a few hours or maybe overnight, but not often.
With the Taj being in Agra though it's a crazy popular tourist destination so I can't imagine it being difficult to get transport. There's a zillion people people going there all the time.

Sometimes it is difficult to get train ticket (especially sleeper class) from train ticket office directly. Much more convenient to use agencies instead - expect to pay app 50-100 rupees extra for the agency.
Also, many times (be that either directly at train ticket office or through agent) it is advisable to pay extra app 100rupees for express service so you will get a better position in the "queue" - ie on the waiting list - they say if you rank 10-15 on the waiting list on longer trains the day before, you have a good chance to actually get your ticket for sleeper class.
I would advise you against taking open ticket to general compartment - it is usually incredible overcrowded. Try to but reserved seat or sleeper if possible.
On shorter routes, buses can be a more convenient option.

Yes, the trains are booked way in advance. But you can always get the tickets if you're lucky. If you're travelling to Agra from Delhi I suggest you go by road. A lot of buses and taxis ply throughout the day.
