What to visit near Mexico City and Guadalajara

Hi!
I just decided to visit Mexico with a friend on my way home (from Canada to Germany). We both speak spanish.
We will stay in Mexico City and then go to Guadalajara. It's a 12 days trip.
Can you suggest me what to visit in day trips from Mexico city or Guadalajara or on the way?
I would appreciate suggestions about "precious pearls" I shouldn't miss, as I love to travel in an alternative way, choosing for examplethe small native communities above the big uniform cities...any suggestion?
Thank you!

In Mexico City, visit the fabulous pyramids outside of town (Teotihuacan), visit the Guadalupe Shrine on the NE side of town (on the way to the pyramids). In town, visit the Zocalo, the Zona Rosa, the archeological museum (one of the two best in the world), Chapultepec Castle, the floating gardens at Xochimilco, see the murals on the buildings at the college south of town, visit the soccer stadium (Azteca) and take a day trip to the silver town of Taxco and the beautiful town of Cuernavaca.

I'm not as familiar with Guadalajara, but I do know that they fish with unusual "butterfly" nets and it is very scenic at Lake Chapala south of town. I know that northwest of town is the small village of Tequila where all the liquor by that name comes from (the local blue agave plants)--and I know they have a gorgeous central area near the large catholic church (fairly true of most Mexican towns).

Enjoy your trip.
