Hi everyone,
There is SO much to see on the drive from the Midwest to the West, especially if you are into nature. I am originally from the Chicago Area and haved lived in both Montana and Idaho (where I currently live), so I've made that drive many of times.
In South Dakota, check out:
The Black Hills
The Badlands
Mt. Rushmore
Wall Drug (super hyped up but it won't change your life)
In Wyoming:
Devil's Tower National Monument
Yellowstone National Park, located in NW Wyoming, SW Montana, and Idaho
To get a little micro-manager on you, I would take 90 through South Dakota (you'll hit all the sites). You can either follow 90 N into Montana and approach Yellowstone from the N on 89 or you stay in Wyoming and take smaller roads to approach Yellowstone from the East. In the latter route, you'll take 20 and go through Bighorn National Forest.
All said, there will be plenty to see. Be careful on mountain passes (trucks, RVs, etc.) and enjoy!
Yellowstone was one of my highlights when I did a camping tour of the USA so I'd make that a definite on your list. While you're in Wyoming theres the Snake River which is good for white water rafting if you're into that kind of thing too. Driving days can be loooong, theres so much ground to cover, so keep this in mind before you start planning a day by day itinerary, although it sounds like you're much more laid back than that which will serve you well Have a great time, I loved exploring the wilderness of the USA! And if you're travelling on to Canada and Alaska, you will have an even greater adventure
I think the Alaska part is a bit much - that state deserves it's own extended trip, and you'll probably be worn out by then anyway. You don't say where you're getting wheels? I seriously doubt that any rental agency would allow one of their cars or RV's to cross the border into Canada let alone to Alaska - they do check these days with GPS. The Western US is one huge land mass - it probably looks one hell of a lot smaller on paper than it actually is. With global warming, you don't necessarily have to go south to get heat or fires - British Columbia had major fires last summer as I recall, and any dry area will have summer fires (even Alaska).

We have been to Seattle, Vancouver and Banff National Park and absolutely love it there! I may include Portland area if it works in the schedule.
Daawgon - we plan to just drive our car on this trip.
Would it be worth it to leave the car in BC/Seattle with family/friends and take a ship to Alaska, and rent another car there? I have never been to Alaska, and have it in my bucket list
