Backpacking Itenerary in Europe for 2-3 weeks

Hey fellow travellers!

Germany:
Munich
Dresden
Hamburg
Stuttgart
Tubingen
Heidelburg
Frankfurt
Rothenburg
Romantic Road
Koln (Cologne)
Berlin

Czech Rep: Prague

If you are coming from Luxembourg, Belgium or the Netherlands I suggest going to Koeln (Cologne) and Frankfurt am Main first.

A possible order if you start in Cologne:
Koeln Hamburg Berlin Dresden Prague Munich Romantic Road Rothenburg Frankfurt Heidelberg Stuttgart Tuebingen

  • Prague is best done starting from Munich or Berlin. If you want to cover Dresden, Berlin, Munich and Prague it is best done Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Munich or vice versa.
  • Skip the Romantic Road - there is nothing romantic about it. It is only a band of asphalt, an ordinary road that connects some good sights.
  • I can strongly recommend visiting Salzburg.
  • Plan on having 3-5 days per city. Travelling Koeln Hamburg Berlin Dresden Prague Munich Romantic Road Rothenburg Frankfurt Heidelberg Stuttgart Tuebingen will take approx. one month.
  • Unless you need to go to Frankfurt for the airport skip it. There is nothing really interesting there. The few sights that are there can be seen in approx. 6 hours.
  • While Stuttgart is not bad it the city is not that interesting. Unless you are a car freak and must go and see the Porsche museum and Mercedes factorites you can skip it too.

Thanks for your detailed response. After doing some more research, I have narrowed down my trip. I still need to figure out why I am visiting each city especially in Netherlands and Belgium. I am going to trust t_maia and just go with the suggestions for Germany.

Netherlands: (Total 3 - 3.5 days)
Amsterdam (2 days)
Utrecht (.5 day)
Den Haag (.5 day)
Rotterdam (.5 day)

Belgium: (Total 3 days)
Antwerp (1 day)
Brussels (1 day)
Gent (.5 day)
Bruges (.5 day)

Luxembourg: (Total of .5 - 1 day) Just a stopover.

Germany/Czech Rep: (Total 11 days)
Koln (Cologne) (1 day)
Hamburg (1 day)
Berlin (2 days)
Dresden (1 day)
Prague (4 days)
Munich (1 day)
Heidelburg (1 day)

1) Any comments on the Itenarary. The goal is to get a feel for the places in general, meet some locals, eat local food. And did mention FOOD... diners/street food Not too worried if I miss some of the places/monuments to see. I know I will be back again...soon!

2) Any particular sequence I should visit them in? I was hoping for a circular route so that depending on my flight tickets, I can still stick to the sequence.

3) I looked up the D-Bahn and it seems that I should be able to travel within Germany using it. I am also considering Berlin lienin coach. How about between countries. It seems like the Benelux-Germany pass is pretty expensive. Or its not?

4) The plan is about 20 days around September 3 - 24 ish. Any suggestions on weather, must-do's etc?
