Hey everybody,
I am planning a trip to Philippines for a month in August and have no idea where to start. Actually I really want to try crazy good food and be on the beach. Mostly I want to learn how to surf, but again, I have no idea on where to start. Can somebody help me map this out? Any help would be great, Thanks!
First of all you should decide what area of the Philippines you want to go to. There are over 7000 islands that are very roughly grouped into 4 or 5 areas. In one month you can't try to see too much, just pick an area that you like the look of and come back to ask more questions. For example I know the Western Visayas pretty well but not much about the other areas.
Bohol is a nice place to visit. Although i haven't been, Palawan looks very nice too. You won't have problems finding beautiful beaches in the Philipines. I think there are a few surf schools located around the Philippines. My advice is to do a bit of reseach on the net, check whether you want to go on the east/west coast and check if it's monsoon season or not.

Sort out your visa first. With a US passport you get 21 days free - not a month unless you were going to get a different type of visa or plan on extensions.
My advice is to start in Manila! Spend a few days there to get used to the heat, see the city and book your flights to other places. If you intended to fly in and immediately fly out you sometimes run into connection problems or have too much time between flights. I usually stay in the Ermita area where there are hotels in many price ranges. Also, in this area is the Robinson Mall, travel agencies for tours, restaurants, bars, short walk to MRT and casinos.
Keep in mind that if you intend to use cheaper small airlines that their weight allowances for baggage may be less than the airplane you came over on and you pay for the overage. Some discount airlines take off and land at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport close to Angeles City but not close to Manila!
Spend the last night in Manila so you will only be a short taxi ride back to the airport instead of arriving at the last minute on a connecting flight (that could also be late or canceled!)
From the airport I like to use the new Yellow Taxi service from the airport. A little more money than basic meter taxi service that you have to hunt up and about half the price of the older airport taxi service.
If you need hotel recommendations mention how much per night you want to spend on a hotel, use a Peso figure not cheap or middle priced, etc.
Good luck.

If you're in search of beautiful beaches, well actually, the Philippines is not the first country to look for them. Okay, there are 7.170 islands, but you can't compare the beaches with those in Thailand or Indonesia...
I really want to try crazy good food
Compared with all the other SEA countries, food in the Philippines ... sucks! Or you have to love fastfood or the German/Swiss delicacies they serve on the beaches.
On the other hand, their 'meriendas' are yummy!
But don't be scared by this comments, despite the 'disavantages' it's my favourite country! Three weeks ago, I just came back from my third visit!

Manila has got good sea food restaurants... You can try Macapagal Boulevard which is near SM mall of Asia which has got good sea food restaurants and fresh too...
Mostly I want to learn how to surf, but again, I have no idea on where to start.
Cloud Nine, on Siargao Island, Mindanao has a good reputation for surfing!
