They usually like to know that you're legit about leaving their country lol, both times I've entered the States they have asked when my on-going flight was at the passport control counter. I'm not sure if its absolutely essential though...you might want to research this for your own peace of mind!
I'd be interested to know peoples experiences of this too. I'm considering a visit to the US, leaving by road into Mexico and beyond. So I wouldn't have a flight booked. This can't be too much of an uncommon thing to do.
My only experience of something like this was going to the Philippines a few years back, I arrived at the check in desk to be asked where my return flight tickets were (I didn't have one). So I quickly had to run to a net cafe and book the first refundable flight from the Philippines I could find on Expedia.
When I arrived in the Philippines I cancelled the flight ticket and carried on as I intended.
There was one person on here earlier who wanted to keep his options open on when he would leave, so he bought a super cheap ticket from Miami to the Bahamas--which is what he told the customs people he woulduse--and then he planned to buy a different ticket to the Carribean at a later point in time.
You might consider a similar strategy.
P.S. Note that I'm not saying you shouldn't plan to stay legal and leave before your visa expires--but I do understand that sometimes you need to have flexibility when your travel plans are not yet finalized.
