bits and bobs for australia

heya guys im travelling to aus on a working holiday starting in sydney in december.

It's worth getting a or , as they'll earn themselves back in roughly 10 (YHA) to 20 (VIP) nights of staying at hostels associated with the respective organization. Which one to get depends on what type of hostel you prefer. You can just buy the card there; no need to get it at home before you leave. The discounts they offer beyond nights at the hostel are indistinguishable; where one gives you discount at stores belonging to one chain, the other will give you discounts at stores belonging to a competing chain. And for bus and train it really doesn't matter, as both will just say "you need a backpacker card".
If for some reason you aren't staying in hostels, and still classify as a student, getting an ISIC card is worth it too, as that also classifies as a backpacker card for transport discounts.

Hey if you go to http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/ that should tell you how to get a medicare card. I would assume you go into an office and fill out a form. You would need a postal address and I assume your work permit. If you do this once you have a bank account if you give them your bank details any rebates can be automatically put into your account. as most doctors require full payment upfront and then medicare rebates the difference.

as above get a HI card or an international student card. They go along way interms of cheaper movies tickets, transport, etc

looking for work... use seek.com.au is a really good website

hope this helps!!

cheers for that, but im from england so apparantly i get a free medicare card, as our countries are connected, i just dont know how about getting the card, but thanks, i guess i'll still have to fill some sort of form out there

Medicare is free for UK residents. Go into a medicare center when you arrive and you will be able to get your medicare number there and then, the card will take up to a week in the post.

I didnt stay in any YHA's in my 12 months in Oz, I also didnt use the greyhound etc. To be fair I never came across a time when I needed a student/backpacker card. If you are planning on doing any of the above though then the card would be worth it as in the end, its only a few quid to get one.

yeah im looking into getting a yha/nomad card.
plus i think i will get a greyhound pass as well, if i do long distance travelling at night it would also save me on hostel costs.
