Have a look at regarding cheap accommodation in Hong Kong. It also contains links to 2 other threads.
The youth hostels in Hong kong are pretty inexpensive, but also pretty basic and not necessarily in the best locations - great views though from Mount Davis. Kowloon has some budget accommodation and is a lively area, but I remember everywhere being quite cramped. There isn't a great back-packer budget scene like other parts of Asia. The city seems to be designed for people with money to burn You must go for Dim Sum on a sunday for a treat!

I'm a solo-traveller so the type of accommodation isn't important, its just needs to be cheap, clean and safe.Cheers

Yep, if you're looking for cheap and cheerful (if a little noisy), you're talking the Mansions in Kowloon. They're right downtown, so it's very convenient. I stayed in the Mirador Mansions, right beside the Chungking Mansions. Basically, the Mansions are rooms scattered throughout apartment complexes, on Kowloon's main street, Nathan Road.
