Hey, I was just wondering about the pro's and con's of taking a laptop travelling with me? I plan to be travelling for about a year, and want to take lots of photo's. I don't really want to carry around a lot of memory cards, so it would be great if I could upload my photo's to the internet as I go. But I don't really know much about netbooks. If I got a small one would it be worth taking it? Grateful for all advice!
Just bought myself one, and yeah for the same reason as you really as to uploading pics.
also it will be good if your trip isnt planned too much like mine so you can research flights, keep in contact with family on video phone call, entertainment like movies, and a little log for everywhere i've been and what i've done.
Obviously there are down sides but i dont think they out weigh the useful aspect of it.
Its only 10" across so very small, built in cam and wifi, and weighs next to nothing.
just keep it out of sight where possible and safe from damage in transit and i think in will be a useful tool.................. i hope

We travelling for a year and am glad I have my netbook.
You will save loads of money as most places we have been (south america and SE Asia) have free wifi but charge for computer internet use.
I use mine o write my blog edit photos and watch loads of movies on slow days or 18hr bus trips.

I have an Asus EeePC for traveling. It's okay for a short while. I have big hands and I can not type quickly on a smaller keyboard but the price was very cheap! Often I prefer to use a real sized keyboard in an internet shop for lots of typing. I do find it useful for long airport layovers for checking emails, all of my flying is to and from overseas and I can get free wifi in business class lounges with my FF card. Not all places have free wifi.
There are some netbooks that have larger keyboards, I think Toshiba is one. When I purchased the Asus I did measure how far across the keys were and the Asus was not the smallest keyboard side to side. Depends on your hands I suppose.
There are limits with a cheap netbook, some don't have CD players if that is a problem. Limited amount of USB ports. When I am at my house I use my iMac or Toshiba laptop and rarely use the netbook except for security updates.
You do have to consider that if it is stolen on the road anything you want to keep private won't be private anymore. Remember to password protect the netbook. It could also be damaged or stolen too. If you plan on using cheap dorms you might just have to take it with you all the time.
You can also consider taking a small portable hard drive instead and download photos until you use internet shops to upload your stuff. A portable HD is easier to carry. For many years I always carry a small flash drive that has Firefox and a few other programs on it. When I plug that FD (U3 System) into an internet shop computer it looks just like the home page on my home computers. I have the same favorites, same toolbar saves and other data. A FD is easy to carry too. Password protect a FD too!

Do you think that a netbook would be better to take, than say a hyper drive or something similar? I do only really want it for uploading photo's, checking flights etc, and perhaps a little bit of blogging. I can't decide if the price of using the internet abroad for a year would be more or less than buying a cheap netbook, and using free wifi!
Also how would I find out where offer's free wifi and where doesn't?
Yes if you are in Vietnam, free wifi is available at most of the cafes, restaurants and hotels.
Take that Netbook! Its nice just to chill out in a coffee shop and kill some time surfing online for free...

I find my notebook such a chore with charging it, storing it when its not needed for the day, hiding it from view in dodgy areas, dodgy power surges (although these are becoming a thing of the past) and admitting wide openly that it takes my mind of the reason I'm on holiday - to get out there and do things. Once I'm in front of the monitor, it goes from 11am to 2pm in the blink of an eye. I prefer the memory cards in my pocket. And besides, with the huge storage nowadays - with something like 10,000+ pics available on 1 card, including several movies as well, why the need for a load of them?

Also, internet access is so cheap in most places in the world now that it's not going to cost the earth to go online regularly.
I have my netbook on the road and I think it's invaluable. I use it for photos, internet and music. It is a bit slower than a laptop or desktop. For a whole year it's worth it- just owning your own information, using it to keep track of things and skype. Lots of places have wifi, in Australia I use mobile broadband. It's small and easy to carry. I have been on a working holiday so settling in and renting flats for months at a time in between travelling.
However, I am soon travelling to SE Asia and considering sending it on to my next stop. I am worried it will make me a target for thieves. I will be seriously backpacking for 2 months. I also bought a much more serious camera and my netbook may not cope as well with the larger filesizes. I have a hardrive as well. Anyone travelled around SE Asia lately? Will I be able to find internet cafes to use to transfer files from memory cards to harddrive in smaller villages?
