Heyup,
I spent my 30th birthday in Halong Bay and would recommend it as it's definitely a memorable place. It's not really somewhere to party though as you would be on a boat (we still had a few drinks though) so if you are looking for somewhere more lively Hanoi might be your best bet. It's a fantastic city with good nightlife so you shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere to celebrate.
Hanoi has to be one of the liveliest cities in Asia. I understand it's about as different from Laos as you can get. I'll soon find out, as I'm trying Laos, myself, in a few weeks. I'm going to Luang Prabang - do you know anything about the high prices there?
Hoi An or Hue - Central Vietnam is aslo lovely to organize your birthday.
I am going to suggest you take a look at . Great public beach, good scuba diving and lively nightlife. Many places have live music. Much smaller city than HCMC & HaNoi. Worth a look IMO.
Cheers for the swuggestions. Nha Trang was where i was thinking! Althogh some friends i have met along the way said there wasn't much there and it wont stop raining in Vietnam at the moment! Any recommendations of lively guesthouses and good places to meet new friends in Nha Trang?
Daawgon- Luang Prabang prices are fine as far as i can remember,. Really nice place too. The journy from there to Vang Vieng is fucking shit scary though!!!! But it has to be done. Almost like a right of passage!
I can't do anything about the rain, but can will try on where to stay. covers my last time in NT. I will stay there again. TP gave this a good review. My friends stayed . Right across the street from the beach, under $10.
NT has many places to go at night. The Sailing Club is probably the best known, but it is a bit pricey IMO. You should hit the Guava Bar, Fuji Cafe, Why Not Bar & Crazy Kim Bar while walking around and decide what place appeals to you. I like to stay in the Biet Thu & Hung Vuong area. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars and the beach all a few minutes walk away. Good luck.
