Travel solo Europe or Thailand

Hey guy's

Hi fellow Canuck....

I am hoping to go to Australia...would love to hear about your adventure! I am wondering what it would cost to go to AU for 6 months? Did you work while there? Where did u stay? Did you go alone? Where did you go in AU? Did you get to NZ??? so many questions..lol..sorry..

Hi
Thailand on your own isn't too bad. I did it about 9 years ago and did a load of research through Rough Guides and Lonely Planets on where to go and what to do. If you follow basic safety info (only get in govt designated/offical transport - the official ones have a govt insignia on display; don't wander around late at night on your own, don't accept lifts, gifts or temptations from strangers - all that sort of stuff) and look at planning your trip out so you know where you are staying at every stop and things should be fine. It may sound a bit restrictive but at least if you have somewhere booked in advance you know where you will sleep and don't have to worry about that when you arrive in new places. You can always just book your first night and worry about accom for subsequent nights once you are there if you want to be a bit freer.

Another thing I always recommend for people travelling alone is leave an itinerary with family or friends and arrange to call them/check in with them regularly (then stick to that arrangement). If the worst thing happens (you lose your luggage, get mugged or lost) they will be notified by the fact you haven't contacted them which means if you can't call they will know as soon as possible. If you don't stick to that arrangement the first anyone could know you are stuck is when you don't get back at the end of your trip! And if you change your intinerary as you go let people know so they know where to look to find you.

Thats not to say the worst would happen but its comforting to know that there is someone out there who will come to your rescue even if you can't let them know you need them. It makes it much easier to get on with your trip!

If you only have 3 weeks you may want to either stick to one part of Thailand or you probably want to consider flights between places. It will take days of travel time to get even a few hundred miles so flying longer distances will preserve your holiday so you get to see as much as possible.

If you want to go to temples remember you have to cover yourself from neck to knees or they wont let you in (like catholic churches in Italy). If you get a tuk tuk/rickshaw negotiate the price first and if you don't want to be taken the 'scenic route' (where they take you to a tailors or jewellers as they get paid for bringing in customers) be very specific and expect journeys to cost more. If you stay in hotels ask them to make transport arrangements for you. You can get fantasticly priced luxury hotel rooms if you book at a local travel agents rather than at a travel agents outside of the country.

I hope that helps and you have a great time!
