Hello,
are most hostels ok with a phonecall a day or two before showing up
During March/April - yes. Just avoid Easter and certain events like fair trades or cultural highlights.
how much would be the recommended on taking for a month?
Depends upon your comfort zone. Are you ok with dorms in hostels or do you want private rooms in budget hotels? Cook yourself in a hostel kitchen, food from the supermarket or eating out in a restaurant/cafe for every meal?
I would say that around 50-65 EUR per day and person would be realistic if you stay in nice hostel dorms and mix cook self-catering with going-out, this does not include the price of the Eurail pass and the flight tickets. So around 1800 EUR/ 2400 USD/1500 GBP.
I've personally travelled on less, but this requires some serious compromises on comfort.

Thanks for the advice!
You have solved my main worry of just turning up and having no where to stay!
We were looking at about 45-55 Euro's a day so I guess we weren't far off with our judgements.
Choose and Romania too,in Brasov for 12 euro you can rent afurnished(basic) room with facilities with self catering, and for 15 euro a roundatrip to Dracula Castle,Loco guide is 30 for a day,so 55 euro for Dracula Castle,by train and bus.Is expensive?? -snip- I spent a week last summer there,I had a furnished(basic) room with shower(bathroom inside room with toilet and bath) and chitchen utilated for self catering(pots, plates, etc).Guide was the host , a man and his wife who was nurse on a cruise ship in Alaska and west USA,and they are english and magyar speaker(required in Romania in some places). So you will have and medical assistance during the trips. Is not a luxury place, but very quet, clean and basic utilated.2o min away railway station,20 min away from downtown,10 min (by foot)away from some megamarkets, even is situated in a suburb of city Brasov.Every day I visited another place and made some shopping with bargains known only by loco citizens,.Is also properly for winter sports(20min away from a winter resort,Poiana Brasovand another one,Predeal). In the nearby is a big market, bakery(fresh, warm bread and pastry every day) and loco police station,so is very safe. You will not regret this choose, believe me.Oh,I forgot about barbeque near the tree forest(100 m away from room)! The last day I spent it to <<green grass>> a place with seats and barbeque fireplaces, woods for free.I remember too about the MITCH flavour( a loco rolling meat dish)roasted up charcoal.....in the middle of the tree forest.
