First time traveller heading to Asia

Hi people, this is my first post, so hey

Hi Mat,

Staying in Kuala Lumpur & brought up in Singapore, so that's de only place I could suggest. If u love beach try those island on the east side of Malaysia. If ur budget permits try those island off Sabah's like sipandan & mabul. If u like shopping then Kuala Lumpur's is the place or you could try Langkawi coz it's tax-free. If u like cultural, Malacca's is the place. For 'exteme hindu cultural' try come during Thaipusam festival & visit Batu Cave. If u like mountains then go Genting or Cameron Highland.

For Singapore, Sentosa & Ochard Road is a must. One thing good about S'pore is their public transport esp MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). Get a hotel near MRT, & the rest will be easy. U might want to try their latest attraction The Sands (swimming pool on the roof top) & Universal Studio.

Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I will be sure to check out the beaches definitely! Tax free shopping also sounds appealing

In fact, all of that sounds interesting, I am an atheist, but seeing the hindu temples and statues etc would be cool and probably a once in a lifetime experience,

Thanks again for the reply, appreciate it.

Matt

Hi people, this is my first post, so hey

I'm Matt, I'm 22 and currently a university student [thinking of quitting to pursue this]. I'm currently planning a bit of a tour around Asia and OZ/NZ. Planning on travelling with STA travel as it's cheap for young people, [unless i find somewhere cheaper]. My aim is to do about 6 or 7 months and get to see *at least some of* China, Thailand, Singapore, Japan - being my main area of interest, part of Australia and onto NZ. Though some of the tours on STA include America in this in exchange for some of the Asian destinations.

I am hoping to do it on £4500 or less, but obviously may not be possible, though I don't mind slumming it a bit.

I am travelling alone and it is my first time travelling so I am both crapping myself and incredibly excited. Thinkin' I'll be going late July, early August of this years, so if anyone is planning similar times say hi!

Any tips or advice I can get would be great, whether that's money saving tips, or simply things I must see or do in these places.

Cheers!

Matt

Cool i'll add you when i found you

O just as a rough idea, i got a basic itinerary drawn up today:

20th July - London - Peking
5th Aug - Peking - Bangkok
3rd Sept - Bangkok - Tokyo
3rd Oct - Tokyo - Sydney
25th Oct - Sydney - Auckland
17th Nov - Auckland - Los Angeles
5th Dec - Los Angeles - London

As I say, only a rough idea, and still very much in planning stage, but from STA, the quote was £1779 which I was pretty chuffed with! Obviously I'll be looking around for quotes but that's gonna be pretty hard to top i think.

Hey Matt,

Saw this thread dated Jan 2011. But oh well, so have you travelled as planned? Im a Singaporean so if you do drop by, let me know
I am planning a trip to Sri Lanka in Dec. Then to Doha. SL is pretty cool. If you havent been on an Asia tour, you could do it now!
