Morocco - Meknes

Hi,

hello Moonie

the option number 1 is the best; you can be based in Fes and have a day trip to Meknes, Volubilis and Molay Idriss Zerhoun, there is a train almost every hour to Meknes from Fes (www.oncf.ma) and it takes around 30 to 45 minutes (depends on the train as there are faster trains), once you are in Meknes head towards the grand taxi station which is located nearby a an old Gaz station closer to PizzaHut (somehow nearby Macdonalds within a couple of metters walk, ask any local and preferably a police man and they will show you where it is exactly) and tell the driver that you are going to Molay Idriss; remeber they will keep asking you if you are going to Volubilis and if you say "Yes" they they will over charge you so say that you are going to Molay Idriss and the price is 10 MADs for the seat; if you are alone then you have to wait for 5 other people as the grand taxi runs when it has 6 people (wihout the driver).

once you are in Molay Idriss you can take the whole grand taxi for yourself to Volubilis for 30 MADs but you can walk as well; around 5 to 6 KMs to get to the roman city, the enterance is 10 MADs.

if you are visiting Morocco in July or August and you can not bear the heat then skip the desert and enjoy your time in the city of wind...Essaouira.

have an enjoyable trip and if you need any help drop me a line. all the best!

greetings from the land of peace
Rachid
Cheers without tears

Hello Moonie. We stayed in Meknes for two nights, a hotel 50mt from the station on the corner of the main road. The restuarant opposite was great. The Grand taxi we hired to visit Molay Idriss and Volubis was cheap, dont forget to buy the sweet rock! The horse carriage we had (the horse was shod with tyre rubber - Brilliant,no skidding) took us to all the sights with no rush - this trip was in October and we enjoyed Meknes very much.

first of all im sorry for this late reply, i would only suggest the Best option that many travelers take. im a moroccan traveler expert so i would help you suggesting to stay in Fes and take a day trip to see them both, hiring a taxi while you are in Meknes then deal with them to visit Volibilis and Moulad driss. so it is worth to see, then try later after you visit them both and finished exploring Fes. get the Bus of Supratours through checking out the railways website: www.oncf.ma linked to the Bus which runs between Fes and the Erg Chebbi. then after the the camel ride experience try to take the other bus from Merzouga ( Erg Chebbi) to Marrakech.
i hope this information will work out for you.
have a nice trip,
Elaine,
