Help: 3 week Honeymoon Itinerary - Mexico, Belize, Honduras?

Can you help us with our 3 country 3 week intinerary??. We want plenty of beach time, a day of scuba and visit 1 or 2 mayan sites and a few old colonial towns. We will be flying into Cancun on 13th June 2011 as it the most cost effective way to get to C America. As it will be just after all the wedding mayhem we plan a total chill out in either cancun or somewhere close by for the 1st 4/5 days or so, maybe 3nights in cancun and 2 in tulum.(Should we explore more of inland mexico before moving on??) We will then travel overland prob by bus to Belize so we can go to Caye Caulker for a couple of nights. Is there anywhere else worth seeing in Belize before we head onto Honduras, again prob overland. I would like to visit Flore/Tikal too if its not too difficult or time consuming.? What is the best way to go from Belize to Honduras??, should we be stopping in Livingston or somewhere else?? our ultimate aim is to get to Bay islands (roatan) for 2/3 nights before flying back to Cancun for return flight home. Are there are other places in Honduras worth spending a day or 2 before we go back?? What about Copan?

I'd go down to Playa Del Carmen if I were you. I hate Cancun, and the prices there are astronomical. Spend your 4 or 5 days somewhere nice.

My suggestion for getting to Caye Caulker is to take the Thunderbolt to San Pedro at six in the morning from Corozal. Then a short hop to Caye Caulker in the afternoon. This way you don't have to go all the way down to BZE only to backtrack to the Cayes.

I don't know of any firm way through Belize to Honduras to the south of Belize. I think you have to go west to the Guat border. The bus that takes you to that border takes you to Flores. See Tikal and then and then go south to the Guat/Honduras border. The only border I have ever crossed there is the one right near Copan, which leads you to spend a night there, or a couple of days, seeing the ruins. Then you head east to La Ceiba and Roatan.

Good luck and congrats on the wedding.

I have a bit of a dilemma regarding part if my itinerary i.e. getting all the way from flores/tikal to placencia in one day. We will be travelling from tulum and the next stopover is flores/tikal or else san ignacio. If we stop and do san ignacio on the way to flores/tikal that will mean that the next leg of the trip will require us to go straight from flores to palencia with no stopovers. Any ideas how long that would take or whether it can be done in one day.

The alternative would br to try and get all the way from tulum to flores/tikal in one day which I expect would be just as challenging?

Do you know how long the boat would take from Palencia to Caye Caulker and how much it would cost??

If this is looking troublesome we may have to skip out the hopkins, placencia part of the trip altogether which I really prefer not to do.

Fuck No.

DO NOT stay in BZE overnight...>That place, and you're talking to a person who LIKES Belize, is a fucking shithole.

I have to say that your itinerary makes no sense. Why return to Caye Caulker AFTER going to Flores? More later....I'm bagged.

You say that flying in and out of Cancun is the best way (cost effective). Although that might be true, you have to go back again all the way. It might be nicer not to go back roughly the same way and fly out of Belize City, San Pedro Sula or Roatan. That way you can just do a one-way trip, do and see more and fly back directly from the other places I mentioned. Ok, still more expensive, but more options as well....

From Belize there are boats to both Guatemala and Honduras. Check the article for all options! To Honduras, there are just a few a week, to Guatemala every day.

O, I believe there is one direct bus between Belize City and San Pedro Sula, which takes 12 hours! It travels via San Ignacio and down into Guatemala. Just mention it because there were things mentioned about this above.

Piecar could you expand!? do you have an alternative.

Since I need to fly in and out of Cancun, how else do I get to see Flore/Tikal, San Ignacio and Caye Caulker without having to go through Belize City twice.

Hi

Just thought I'd leave a note as I stayed in Playa Del Carmen last year from 20th June 10 to 5th July 10. Playa is much much nicer then Cancun and a lot cheaper!

But I would say a definate must while u are there is to swim with the whale sharks especially as you are there during peak season for them!!! It completely made my holiday there and although a little pricey you can pay a lot less then what they originally offer if u book in playa (definately don't book online before you go) - I ended up paying $120 american dollars but it was an experiance of a lifetime!

Hope you have a great honeymoon.

You do have to go through the city twice...I'd go from Tulum to Corozal, and then get the Thunderbolt to San Pedro, walk to the other side of the island and take the short hop to Caye Caulker. When you're done, get the launch to BZE in the morning, get the bus directly from there to San Ignacio. When you are coming back, it's not that far to get to the border of Belize Mexico...Or take the launch again and go to San PEdro for the night. Then take the Thunderbolt back to Corozal and off to Crapcun. You are much much closer to get to Caye Caulker on your trip DOWN to Belize than you are coming back from TIkal.

But, even if you want to keep your itinerary, cut out the staying in BZE thing

Going through BZE is one thing...But the city looks like it was hit by a bomb, ten minutes ago. Not very romantic.

Sorry I should have said, since I posted the draft itinerary I decided to try and make the trip straight from tulum to san ignacio in one day, avoiding a stay in Belize City. After that we go to Flores/Tikal for a few days. Once we are finished there we will try and make it to Drangriga or else Caye Caulker in one day. Phew! sounds hectic but I cant see any locations in between that are worth a stop over.
