Rio-Bogota....Time and Costs. Help

Hi all,

Im planning a similar trip for Sept so im interested in a response to this too. From the research that iv done so far I would say that 4 months is probably cutting it a bit tight, im aiming for 5-6 months myself.

5000 sounds like plenty for 4 months though or else im way off on my costs.

Anyway im interested to see what people say.

Hey Kier, Mac1234,

Hope i can help - i did this exact trip (with variations) from August to December 2010.

The thing i would say first is that Argentina is massive - if you're planning to head south from rio down the coast Patagonia than you'll be pressed for time (internal flights would be a must).
But from your list of countries i doubt you're going south of Buenos Airies. If this is the case then 4 months is fine - you can pick and choose where you like best and stay there longer.

5000 euro is ample, enough to get by, food, clothing, added extras without having to sacrifice the many trips/ things to see on the way.
Be aware that you still have huge bus/train journeys involved here on the way up to Colombia - some aren't easy.
One or two internal flights certainly ease the mind at times.

My experience was that Brazil is very expensive, Argentina slightly less so, Bolivia stunningly cheap, Peru reasonable, Ecuador slightly less reasonable than Peru (because they use the US dollar), and Colombia back to Argentinian prices.
Therefore it depends how long you plan to stay in each country. If i were you i'd spend a week on the beach, then get the hell out of Brazil. You'll come back with change if you stay in Bolivia and Peru longest.....

If you want to know more specific stuff, i can try and answer!
Huw

Hey BowenH1,
